Makeup Monday: Burnt Red-Orange Smokey Eye

Who doesn’t LOVE a good burnt red/orangey smokey eye look?! If you don’t, then you should. It’s my favorite go-to  smokey look. Not too dramatic, but still packs a punch! Even though spring will be in full swing soon enough, who cares about trends and makeup rules. I think this burnt smokey eye could be rocked all year long, even though it is typically more popular in the fall time. The trick is to just embrace it and feel confident and it will look natural on you all year long!

Let’s Get Started

EYES: When I’m using lots of darker shadows I like to start with my eyes just incase there is any fallout from the shadow. First, I will prep my eyes with the Painterly Pro Longwear Paint Pot from MAC. You can rub this on your entire eye lid with a fingertip or just use any concealer brush. Set that using any translucent or flesh toned powder. Next, i’ll use a shadow just slightly darker than my skin tone in my crease with a Morphe M441 brush.
Next, I take a slightly darker, cool toned brown to deepen up the crease. I’ll use the same morphe crease brush to blend the two colors in the crease.
Once those two colors are blended well in and just above the crease, I’ll go in with a deeper red toned (slightly satin) shade to add a little more depth. With this color, I’ll focus it mostly deep in the crease and on the outer corner. This is the color that will really bring out the other colors in the look so don’t be afraid to build it up. I apply this color with a Real Techniques Base Shadow Brush.
Next, I’ll take the E.L.F. Cosmetics Eyeshadow “C” brush and a medium toned brownish/red color and apply that to the entire lower lid, just below the crease colors. Take the original morphe brush and blend it out in the crease again to make sure there are no harsh lines. Smokey looks require a lot of blending! So flex those hand and wrist muscles because the more you blend, the more seamless and effortless it will look!
To really create the smokey effect, I’ll apply a dark grey toned brown to the outer “V” of the eye and blend that all together. Be sure to apply it to the outer most third of the eye and blend inwards, not outwards. I use a BH Cosmetics Angled Shadow Brush to apply this color.
Do one final sweep to make sure that shit is blended to perfection. I then did a winged liquid liner with the Balm’s Schwing Liquid Liner. That step isn’t mandatory, but I highly suggest it to pull this look together. I already have lash extensions applied to my own lashes so I don’t use any top mascara or false lashes, but you can do so at the time if you wish! And, thats all for the eyes, for now!
FACE: Now, we go onto zee face! My face has been oily/combination AF lately, so to help with that I used Boots No7 Beautifully Matte Makeup Base to prime my face. For foundation I used a Morphe M439 brush to apply my MAC Pro Longwear Waterproof foundation in the shade NC20. I looovve using this brush to buff out this particular foundation, I just think that the two go together so well! Anyway, once that is all buffed in, I used my new (new to me) Maybelline Instant Age Rewind Concealer to, duh, conceal and also highlight underneath my eyes, on my forehead, nose, and my chin. I don’t know why it took me sooo long to finally try this concealer because it is the best drugstore concealer I have ever used! It blends out so perfectly. I’m in love 🙂 By the way, I use a damp beauty blender to blend it out because its just the best method that works for me!
I’ve been using the Laura Mercier Translucent Setting Powder lately to, of course, set my face and been loving it! Also, been using a touch of MAC Shaping Powder in “Emphasize” underneath my eye to brighten it up a bit!
K, lets go back to the eyes for a sec. Now that we’ve put our foundation on we can smoke out the lower lash line. I used the same deep red/brown color with that same Eyeshadow “C” brush and put it just underneath the lower lashes. Then just for fun I added a lighter orange color to add some light underneath.
Back to the face, I bronzed with Too Faced Milk Chocolate Soleil Bronzer with a large fluffy powder brush and contoured with Nyx Blush in “Taupe” just along the hollows of my cheeks, temples of my forehead and my jawline. And for highlight, I used my favorite drugstore highlight, Wet N Wild Coloricon in “Reserve your Cabana” along the high points of my cheek bones!
For Blush, I used MAC Pressed Blush in “Peachy Keen” to add a little bit of color to my cheeks. Then I just filled in my brows with any dark brown brow powder I had laying around!
FINALLY, LIPS: I went in with Dose of Colors Liquid Lipstick in the color “Truffle” and over lined my lips just a bit. On the center of my lips I added the color “Bare with Me” just to make the color a little more nude since the eyes were more bold! To finish off, I spritz my face with L’oreal Infallible Pro Setting Spray and we’re DONE!
I hope you guys enjoyed this look/ tutorial! As always, if you recreate this look or enjoyed it, leave me a comment below (or any questions) or connect with me on instagram @girlirae! I’d love to see what you all come up with!

Liquid Lipstick Chronicles: Kat Von D

Welcome to the liquid lipstick chronicles! Liquid lipsticks seem to be one of the most popular products that are coming out in almost every makeup brand..And with good reason. Most every woman wants a lipstick that will last all day. Seeing as how I have almost 40 different liquid lipsticks from over 10 different brands, I thought it would be a great idea to compare and see which ones rank the best!
The Kat Von D Everlasting Liquid Lipsticks were some of the first ones I tried! I have always admired Kat Von D for being authentic and unique and never apologizing for it! Besides the fact that she is an incredible artist, I knew that her makeup line had to be great too! I have never really liked lipsticks before. I hated that they weren’t “kiss proof” and whenever I would forget I was wearing them, you bet I ended up smudging them all over my face. One look that I definitely can’t pull off :/ When I heard about liquid lipsticks, I thought, “well, that’s for me!” Finally! A lip color that I could wear all day and not worry about smudging.
With a price tag of $20 I was a little skeptical. But, Sephora has this magical way of making you want to spend more money than you even thought possible. So, I ended up buying 2- the colors: Armageddon and Mother. The first night I had them, I fell in love. A little drying on the lips, but oh man! They last all damn day! First time I wore them  I ate a CHEESEBURGER, and they still didn’t budge. I now own 9 of them, and hope to have all one day. After having 9 of them, I feel confident in saying that the formula is consistent with all of them and all around really enjoyable to wear! What’s best is that they are formulated without parabens!
I’ll give you some descriptions as shown on the website:

Carnation pink

My description: This color seems like the perfect “Barbie Pink”. It’s a bright, playful and bold pink color. Would look best, in my opinion, on darker skin tones. But hey, I am as pale as a piece of paper and still reach for this color in the spring and summer!

Dusty Mauve Pink
My description: Dusty? Not so much. I would describe this color as more of a deep rose pink. Not an incredibly unique color, but definitely a staple in any lipstick collection. This is one of my favorite colors for the summer. Perfect pop of color for the summer!

Ripe Blackberry
My description: Yes and YAASSS! I love this color- SO MUCH! Like I said, I’m pale. This color is such a deep wine “blackberry” color on me and is such a beautiful contrast on my light skin. Great with a cooler toned look, smokey eye, grays, purples- you get the gist.

Chestnut Rose
My description: Ok, so a little backstory with this one. This is one of the more coveted colors from her line. Apparently, there was a mishap at the manufacturer during one shipment, where the batch came out more “brown” toned than it should have. As you can see from the swatch, mine was not one of them. Lolita, on me, is a great mauve nude color. My go-to for any simple, everyday look. Goes with so many looks and so many skin tones, so if there is one color you want to start off with, Lolita would be a good choice. It’s really hard to get your hands on this one, so you may have to just purchase it off the sephora website, but, IT’S WORTH IT!

Lolita II-

Terra Cotta Nude
My description: The sister color to Lolita. A little more playful. The websites description is pretty spot on though. Terra Cotta definitely comes to mind when picturing this color. Sometimes it feels a little orange to me. Definitely, I feel, would look better with a tan or on darker skin tones, but also glad that I purchased it. I don’t find myself reaching for this color as much as I do for others. But, when I’m feeling a little sassy some days, this color is the one I go for.

Soft Lilac
My description: Soft lilac, sounds nice doesn’t it? No, not for me. I wanted to like this color so much when I first bought it. Now, the only time I use it, is to mix it with other colors. I’ve seen it on so many people, and it looks great on them. But me? Nope. Just way too pale of a color. I am already so pale that I just can’t pull this color off at all. Bummer, but I would not repurchase it 🙁

Santa Sangre-

Poison Apple
My description: Very orangey-red. Good for if you’re looking for a red that isn’t so bold. Not a typical “true blue” red. And once again, the orangey colors don’t look the best on me, so I am a little biased. It’s another one of the colors that I don’t reach for the most, but I do love to do a nice red ombre with it and a darker red paired together.

Blood Crimson
My description: Blood crimson is pretty accurate. Out of all the darker red colors that I own from her line, this one isn’t my favorite. However, it is still beautiful. I just prefer Vampira and Exorcism over this one a little bit more. IF this were the only darker red I had from her collection, then I would definitely be rocking it on a weekly basis!

Deep Reddish Burgundy
My description: My love!! Deep reddish burgundy is accurate once again. Out of all the KVD colors I own, this is probably my favorite! I, hands down, get the most compliments on my lipstick when I wear this one. This is one of those colors where I think it sort of transforms based on your skin tone. On me, (since I’m pale), it’s very deep, dark and beautiful. Almost a blackish red. If I’m going for a sultry, romantic look, this is absolutely the color I go for!!

Final Thoughts

KVD Everlasting Liquid Lipsticks- definitely worth the investment. All the swatches shown are only one layer. They have a streak-free formula. Slightly hydrating, slightly drying at the same time, but yes, they are everlasting! I have gotten at the most about 8-10 hours of wear. They layer really well if you do feel like you want to reapply throughout the day. Some liquid lipsticks end up cakey if you add a second layer to them. These lipsticks really set the bar high for my expectations of other similar products. I believe that the KVD lipsticks have 28 different colors to choose from, ranging from nudes all the way to a pitch black. A little something for anyone to love. If I had one bone to pick with them, it would be the price. At $20 each, that adds up quickly. But still, to this day, they are one of my favorite color selections, formulations, and lasting power. Buy one at least, just to try if you are still unsure about purchasing. I honestly don’t understand why someone wouldn’t like them, unless you don’t like a matte color. They dry completely matte. Although, a clear gloss would go easy over them (in my opinion though that kind of defeats the whole purpose of the product) The next colors I want to purchase would be Bow N Arrow, Berlin, Witches and Beloved.

Tell me what you think? Do you like them? Was this review helpful to you? If you’d like me to do an actual lip swatch of all the colors I own, please leave me a comment below! Or connect with me on instagram @girlirae, twitter @girli_rae and email

Battle of the Foundations

Hi guys! So, today I wanted to talk a little bit about some foundations that I’ve been trying out and little mini reviews on each of them! Maybe you’ve noticed in my past couple of posts that I have been struggling a bit with more oily skin recently! Usually my skin is normal to combo, but recently I have just had excess oil that I couldn’t seem to disguise! I did a little research and experimentation and I found a few that I’ve been loving!

1.  Urban Decay- Naked Skin Weightless Ultra Definition Foundation

I’ve been using this foundation for about a month or two and it has been one of my “go-to” foundations. It’s great for everyday use! When they describe it as weightless, they really mean it. This foundation is so lightweight all day. Does not feel cakey at all, even by the end of the day it still just feels like your skin! I do have to set this foundation with a very good oil control powder because I will get oily with this foundation if I don’t set it. Even with a powder, I still have to do about 1 or 2 touch ups throughout the day which is honestly a little annoying. But, I’m still going to rate this foundation a 4 out of 5 due to the natural satin finish, the wearability and how lightweight it is!

2. Too Faced- Born This Way Foundation

This foundation is sort of a toss up for me. On one hand, I love how full coverage it is and how flawless it makes my face look when I first apply it. It’s a great foundation to wear when I’m going out or going to be taking pictures and want that “doll-like” flawless appearance. On the other hand, it does not wear long on me at all. Also, it does nothing for oil control with my skin. Within about 3 or 4 hours it starts to separate on my skin making my skin go from flawless, to oily and patchy (which is a look I don’t think anyone can really pull off). As it starts to separate and get oily, it also starts to FEEL really cakey, which is probably my least favorite trait about the foundation. I would probably rate this foundation a 2 or 3 out of 5. Don’t get me wrong, I still really like this foundation for short term wear, but for all day long, oil control- it’s not the best on my skin! I have heard and seen better reviews from people who have normal to dry skin, since it has a natural finish and can be hydrating on dry skin.

3. Makeup Forever- Ultra HD Invisible Stick Foundation

I have a similar view on this foundation as I do for the Too Faced foundation. I think it would be great for people with normal to dry skin. It does look flawless and sits really well on the skin when you FIRST apply it. But, on my skin, it does not wear long enough for every day, all day wear. On my skin it got a bit oily around 5 hours of wear. Not too bad, but when I am at work, I just don’t have the time or want to have to touch up every couple of hours. It is a very full coverage foundation, so if you’re into that, and don’t have oily skin, then I think it would be great. I’ve seen well known youtubers such as Jaclyn Hill and NikkieTutorials that RAVE about this foundation. But, as far as I can tell, they both have normal and sometimes dry skin, so I think that has a great deal to do with why they would love it. For me, this again, is another foundation that I would really only want to wear if I were going out for a couple of hours and wanted that flawless, full coverage look! I would rate this foundation a 3 out of 5 due to the flawless coverage!

4. Kat Von D- Lock It Foundation

Ok, FINALLY a full coverage foundation that could probably last you all day through even a hurricane. This foundation has some serious stay power. If you’ve seen Kat Von D at all in the past, you can tell she’s a fan of the full coverage. So it’s no surprise that her foundation is the same. One of the things I love most about this foundation is that the shade (45 light) is a PERFECT match for me, which is great since that pretty much never happens for me. It has an incredibly matte finish to it, which again is great for people like me with oily skin. It will last all day and doesn’t start to separate or look oily/cakey until about 8 hours of wear. I do set it with an oil control powder, as I do for pretty much any foundation that I wear. But it hold us extremely well! For my skin type, the foundation will look just as flawless at the end of the day as it  does at the beginning of the day. I would rate this a 4 out of 5- only taking away one point because of how full coverage it is, it isn’t really an every day wear foundation for me- but, I still love it on occasion!

5. Cover Girl- Ready Set Gorgeous Foundation

WOO! A drugstore foundation for you guys that don’t want to spend a pretty penny on your foundation. Coming in at about $8 (depending on which drugstore you shop at) This foundation is easily accessible, very affordable and a good fit for almost any skin type I would say. There was a good couple of months last summer where this was the only foundation I was wearing. Lightweight and a natural finish, it was great on my skin and looked almost undetectable. It never got cakey on my skin and I never had any excess oil issues with it. I mix the shades 105 and 110 to get the perfect match for me. I wouldn’t say its the best foundation I’ve tried but I was pleasantly surprised with it! I would rate it a 3 out of 5 since it does just wear off by the end of the day and never has a super flawless finish.

6. L’oreal- Infallible Pro Matte Liquid Foundation

Last, but certainly not least, is the L’oreal Infallible Pro Matte. This has been my FAVORITE foundation as of late for longevity, matte finish and helping with my oil control. I seriously love this stuff. Took me a while to find the right shade for me. I wear the shade 102, or I can mix 101 with 103, since I got all 3 before finding which one matched me right. This foundation looks flawless for the minute its applied. Stays matte ALL DAY LONG, which I really can’t even explain how happy that makes me. When I finally started wearing this, after hearing so many people rave about it, I was kicking myself for not purchasing it sooner! It is more expensive for a drugstore foundation (about $12-$14) but so worth it! I wear a mattifying primer with it, as well as a setting powder and it looks great all day. I never have to worry about touch ups, and it never feel cakey or heavy. One drawback I would say is that since it is so matte, a moisturizer is definitely needed so that your skin won’t feel so tight. But, hands down, out of the six foundations I am reviewing today, this is my fave! Definitely going to rate this a 5 out of 5. If you are into more of a dewy finish, then I’m not sure that you would love this as much as I do. But, I gotta say, this foundation blew me away!

So, for the 6 foundations these are my rankings:

1. L’oreal Infallible Pro Matte
2. Urban Decay Naked Skin
3. Kat Von D Lock It Foundation
4. Cover Girl Ready, Set, Gorgeous
5. Too Faced Born This Way
6. Makeup Forever Ultra HD Stick

Please remember that these are just my opinions with my skin type, how they worked for me! I hope this was helpful for anyone looking into trying some new foundations. Foundations are honestly one of my favorite makeup items to try out, so there will definitely be some more reviews like this in the future! Do you love any of these? Do you hate them? What is your favorite foundation at the moment!? Leave me a comment below, or connect with me on instagram @girlirae! I’d love to hear your opinions!

Makeup Monday: Everyday “Work” Look

I always love a good, bold eye look, but when I am getting ready for work in the morning I’m usually in a rush! Princess needs her beauty sleep ;). This look isn’t exactly your “5 minute makeup routine”, but it is natural enough to take only about 10-15 minutes, which is a look I can definitely afford time for in the morning! Follow along to get this simple and flawless look!
First, I always start with cleansing, toning and moisturizing. That’s a must, especially if you do want your makeup to look flawless. To prime, I use Makeup Forever Base Mattifying Primer, since my skin has been more on the oily side lately, this primer makes my skin matte all day! One of my go-to foundations for natural finish is the Urban Decay Naked Skin Foundation in shade #2 which I apply liberally with a Beauty Blender. To conceal and highlight I use the Naked Skin Complete Coverage Weightless Concealer, which pairs great with the Naked Skin foundation! I highlight just under my eye in an upside down triangle shape, on the bridge of my nose, my chin and a little bit on my forehead. Highlighting all throughout the middle of my face will bring a more cohesive look so my under eye isn’t the only bright area! To bronze and contour I use one of my new FAVORITE bronzers, the Too Faced Milk Chocolate Soleil Matte Bronzer. A couple of reasons why I love this bronzer. It is very friendly to pale girls like me, comes in 3 different shades, and like it’s name suggests, IT SMELLS LIKE CHOCOLATE– Um, yes please! It’s infused with cocoa powder and feels so nice! I use a large fluffy brush to apply to my cheeks, temples and sides of my forehead. I’ll set my foundation and concealer with the RCMA No Color Powder — which has also been a game changer for my oil control needs! For blush, I’ll usually use either the Milani Baked Blush in the color Luminoso  or Mac’s Powder Blush in the color Peachy Keen just depending on my mood that day. Now, let’s move on to the eyes!
I fill in my brows with the Anastasia Beverly Hills Brow Definer. To prime my eyes, I use Mac Soft Ochre Paint Pot and set it with Mac Eyeshadow in “Orb”
Next, in my crease I’ll use Urban Decay Eyshadow in “Beware”– I LOVE this color not only because of the color, but because of how incredibly soft and blendable it is! MUST HAVE! I usually just take a large crease blending brush like the Morphe M441 and build up the color in my crease until I like the shadow. I build up just  enough in my crease to create a natural “shadow”. The effect I want to create is as if I am not wearing eye shadow at all. So this is definitely not and intense spread of color and it is not a smokey effect. Just nice, sweet and simple.
Now, because I am a winged liner addict, I of course, put a wing on it! You can do this or not do this, up to you. But I personally feel more “complete” for work with a winged liner. Finally, to highlight my inner corner and brow bone, I use Mac Eyeshadow in “Nylon”, which is like the mother load of all eye highlighters! In the shadow pan it looks almost like an alabaster color, but when swatched on your hand or eye (whatever) it looks like a white light from the clouds!
(Orb is a very neutral toned color, so it almost blends in with my skin)
To finish, I just smudge a little bit of “Beware” on my lower lash line, not too smokey, just to create a little shadow, and add mascara to my lower lashes! (I already have lash extensions on, so that saves a good couple of minutes on my routine)  Done!
For a natural, but noticeable lip, I’ll use one of the Too Faced Melted Liquified Lipsticks, on this day I used the color “Melted Fig” ,  “Melted Chihuahua” is also a very good natural color to use!
Finally, set the entire look with Urban Decay De-slick Setting Spray.  I know it may seem like a lot of steps, but I swear, it’s not! Honestly takes me only about 15 mins tops! Lasts all day, and it is professional enough to wear to work and feel confident- which is really the most important part of makeup if you ask me. Have fun and feel confident!
Hope you guys enjoyed this look! Let me know what you think, leave a comment below or connect with me on instagram @girlirae!

Kylie Lip Kits: Yay or Nay?

So, unless you’ve been living under a rock for the past couple of months, you’ve probably heard about these highly coveted Kylie Lip Kits by Kylie Cosmetics! Ever since these liquid lipstick+lip liner duos came out I have been extremely curious if they were actually amazing, or if it were all because of the Kardashian/Jenner fame. I’ll be honest. I originally bought these purely to test them out and review, because I’m definitely not lacking in the liquid lipstick department. Owning close to 30 different brands and colors, I would consider myself somewhat of a “liquid lipstick snob”. I have my likes and dislikes about so many different brands and I definitely know a good one when I see one!
Let me just start by telling you a little about my crazy purchasing experience! When I decided I wanted to purchase a few, I first went to the Kylie Cosmetics website. All sold out- shit! So then, I went to the Kylie Cosmetics official instagram to see when the next launch date was. It happened to be the upcoming Monday from that day, they had a date and a very SPECIFIC time that the new products would be restocked. This part is important! I set an alarm on my phone for 10 minutes before they would be restocked. When the time and date came, I was at work. I actually took a break from work to purchase them. I had read before that these lipsticks were selling out in record time and I really didn’t want to wait. I kept hitting the refresh button waiting for all the products to be back in stock- it was nerve wracking! As soon as they reappeared, I quickly added the color 22 to my basket. I had already decided I definitely wanted that color. I always like to try at least 2 shades of every brand I try because formulation can be different depending on the colors. So I VERY QUICKLY made the decision to get Posie K also. During my checkout process, the website crashed– double shit! I kept refreshing until it finally came back up, because you know she and her team were probably already expecting this to happen. Quickly put in all my info and hit place order. Took 10 MINUTES to process my order, which is incredibly long for an online order to be processed (later I found out that there were over 100,000 users on the site at that time!) I took a deep sigh of relief and patiently awaited my confirmation email which came about 4 hours later. I also later found out that all units of every shade completely sold out within 16 minutes! When I say you have to be quick in order to purchase these babies, I mean it! One week later, my precious lipsticks arrived!
The packaging was great. Foam surrounded the two boxes containing the two colors I had purchased. Inside each box: a full sized liquid lipstick and full sized lip liner pencil. All for $29 each, which is a really great price for high end. Most brands sell the lipsticks for about $20 and high end lip liners can range anywhere from $12-$30. So you’re saving about $10 when purchasing the Kylie Lip Kits. Now to see if these are really worth all the hype!
I swatched the two shades and liners on my hand. Ok, seemed pretty standard texture and quality. Very pigmented and the colors dried to matte within about a minute. I am very happy about the two colors I decided to get! 22 is a lovely orangey-red color that I actually didn’t already have in my collection. Posie K is more of a dark pink (mauve) shade. However, I will say that these colors totally transform based on your skin type. As I am on the paler side, this color does show up a little bit more of a dark pink shade. The tanner your skin, the more neutral this shade will appear. The lipsticks have a standard doe foot applicator, and the liners are standard requiring a sharpener when they dull down. Regular pencil sharpeners will do, or you can find a pretty cheap one at your local drugstore.
I was mostly impressed with the longevity of the lipsticks! They lasted ALL DAY LONG! Even the lip liners, which are incredibly creamy and go on so easy. Even when I got home I had to use an oil based makeup remover to get them completely off my lips. The colors are a bit drying on the lips, but thats to be expected with any liquid to matte lipstick. They are definitely not over drying, just be sure to moisturize your lips before application. I’ve used these lipsticks about 7 times in the last 2 weeks of owning them, reaching mostly for the color 22 more often than Posie K. Both are great colors, but my personal favorites are always nudes and reds more so than pink shades.
My overall opinion: if you can get them the second they get restocked, GO FOR IT! These would be great lipsticks to start off your collection if you’re a newbie to the liquid lipstick world. If you already have quite a collection going, then probably just try and purchase the colors you don’t already have in your collection. As of right now there are 7 colors to choose from. 22, Koko K, Posie K, Candy K, Dolce K, True Brown K and Mary Jo K. 2 pinks, 2 nudes, 1 brown and 2 reds. With rumors of more new shades to come! Personally, I plan on collecting all the colors!
A little friendly tip though- I DO NOT think they are worth it to buy for 2x or 3x the price on ebay or amazon. Some selling on ebay for $100-$300 for a lipstick! Girl, no! Just wait it out and buy them before they sell out again.
Have you already tried these lipsticks? What were your thoughts about them! Leave a comment below or connect with me on instagram @girlirae – I would love to know others experiences with these!
